Mobile Phones and Unemployment

IELTS Writing Excercise

Some people argue that the government should give every unemployed person a mobile phone and should make sure they have access to the Internet.

They believe this is the best way of using p ublic money to recude the problem of unemployment.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The growth of communication technology rises exponentially nowadays. This brought mankind into a new age called the information age. There are no longer boundaries such as time or geographical location for information to flow. Mobile phones and the internet are the key instrument for information today. The flexibility of mobile phones suits life in information era. Not to forget the internet, where the magic of connecting into everything else in the world happens.

People are now moving forward as the access to information gets easier. On the other hand, when people don’t follow the fast-paced era of information, they will be left behind. The same thing applies to unempleyed people. Unemployed people are the ones who really need to be kept informed. I think everyone should agree that the government is responsible to make sure that every citizen especially unemployed people have access to information.

However the question is whether it is appropriate to execute the idea by using public money to provide unemployed people with mobile phones and internet. Public money is best used for programmes with long term vision. It is very inappropriate to use public money for instant and personal favor. We have to consider that mobile phones and internet here can also be used for personal need of the unemployed people.

Public money is hoped to bring a lot of benefit for the public, including the problem of unemployment. In my opinion public money could be used to improve libraries or other public facilities that can be used for unemployed people to help them find jobs or to keep them educated. This will be a better solution for long term plan.
